Valpolicella Itinerary

If it has anything to do with wine, we want to know about it!

Valpolicella Itinerary

Postby malcolme16 » Thu Jul 31, 2014 4:09 pm

Hi

Heading to Italy and will be staying just East of Verona for a few days; if anyone has any recommendations for smaller producers to visit I'd be grateful. Will have a car so can get around.

Many thanks in advance.

If you're in Verona itself, try a producer about 5km up the hill called St Mattia. Better still, stay there, and check out the restaurant. They also do a farm tour and wine tasting.

I was there two weeks ago.

Hi Malcolm
We stayed around there last year, at the Massimago agriturismo in Mezzane di Sotto.

Some general comments - if you're staying near there I may have other reccos

- Valpolicella superiore was in general a revelation - very high standard (the ripasso wines are more troublesome for my palate - wannabee amarone but showing fatness without depth)
- Roccolo Grassi in Mezzane di Sotto was the star winery for us, just pipping Gini in Monteforte d'Alpone (Soave). Marco Mosconi (in Illasi) was very good/good value as well. Villa Erbice was sad, as they were nice welcoming people, and the winery has some wonderful history/faded frescoes, but the wines are workmanlike / simple trattoria wines. Fairly priced but when travelling all that way, it's not going to be worth your effort
- Bottega del Vino in Verona is a right in the centre, yet still slightly hidden away. Oddly the wine disappointed (stupid big glasses for a relatively small pour didn't help), but the food was exceptionally well done 'classics' - it's a sure hand that can make a ubiquitous dish taste really special.
- Soave is worth a trip with/without car, it's a nice contained place making it a pleasant day trip
- Central Verona is pretty touristy IMO, but that can be an upside if you have no Italian. Lots of fancy watch, jewellery etc. shops
- There is a new opera museum associated to the arena, which might not be in the guidebooks yet

regards
