Just heard another one of the great Barossa Valley characters, Bob McLean, passed away this morning after a battle with cancer.

I will never forget the big man, especially his infectious enthusiasm and sense of humour.

RIP Bob.

A tribute by Philip White with Bob's words. Milton Wordley showed me that amazing picture of him last Saturday at lunch, absolutely brilliant:

BAROSSA wine industry identity Bob McLean has died after a seven-month battle with liver cancer.

The larger-than-life figure, considered one of the most dynamic personalities of the Australian wine industry throughout the 1980s and ‘90s, was one of the leading lights in showcasing the Barossa Valley’s big reds to the United Kingdom and the rest of the world.

As an ebullient host locally to overseas trade and also a touring marketing genius, he was considered one of the key engineers of building Australia’s reputation as a New World wine powerhouse.

Mr McLean was highly regarded for his career in South Australian companies such as Orlando, Petaluma, and St Hallett, where he was managing director before it was bought by Banksia and eventually Lion Nathan.

After battling liver cancer for seven months, Mr McLean, 67, was admitted on Easter Sunday to his village hospital at Angaston in the Barossa Valley, where he died on Thursday.
