Wignall Pinot Noir 2009

Wignall's is a well established Great Southern (WA) producer only a few minutes out of Albany. Their Pinot Noir in particular has been noteworthy for years, and I am a fan of their Chardonnay, too.

Ironically, as a novice, I remember thinking that the earthiness in their 1993 Pinot Noir (a glass at a restaurant) meant there was something wrong with it. My education has improved since then :D

This is garnet red in colour, and quite clear. The nose has earthiness (I didn't see that coming :) ) with some bright red cherry fruit, mushroom, and savoury (possibly oak derived) characters. The palate is the highlight, however, with good acid, fine grained but very supportive tannins, and a line of fruit through the length of the palate. I've heard talk of a 'peacock's tail' finish for quality pinot, and this has it, as an extension of the palate line.

I still have 3 bottles of this, and it will be interesting to see how it develops.
