ONE of Adelaide’s most prestigious restaurants, the Italian diner Auge, has closed its doors with debts of more than $500,000.

The restaurant was scheduled to reopen this week after a Christmas break but the company behind it, La Cucina Adelaide Pty Ltd, has been placed into administration. A meeting of creditors will be held next week.

Auge has won a string of accolades for its refined and creative Italian cooking since opening 15 years ago. In the past few years, it has been renovated to include a new bar area and lighten up the dining room.

Owner Terry Soukoulis, a former president of Restaurant and Catering SA, has been a vocal advocate for the hospitality industry, particularly on issues such as penalty rates for staff.

Receiver Mark Lieberenz, from Heard Phillips Chartered Accountants, said yesterday

liquidators had been appointed on January 9.

“They didn’t have sufficient funds to reopen the doors after the holiday period,” he said.

Mr Lieberenz said about 50 creditors, including the Australian Taxation Office, suppliers and employees, were owed more than $500,000.

The chief executive of RCSA, Sally Neville, said it could be difficult for older restaurants, such as Auge, to continue attracting customers.

“It’s always a challenge for the experienced businesses to see the focus of the city and state on vibrancy reflected in new businesses rather than broadening the share so there is more in the pie for everyone,” she said.

“We need to encourage everyone to dine out more and have a range of experiences and not just look at one sector as being the new kid on the block that we should be supporting.”
